Understanding swallowing rehabilitation begins with understanding how the nervous system learns and adapts.

In Neurosciences and Swallowing Rehabilitation: Froggymouth — An Anoetic Approach, orthodontist and Froggymouth creator Dr. Patrick Fellus explores the neurological foundations of swallowing function and the development of his innovative approach to passive swallowing rehabilitation.

Drawing on more than 40 years of experience in pediatric orthodontics, Dr. Fellus examines the relationship between oral dysfunction, neuromuscular patterns, and orthodontic treatment. His work highlights the role of the lips in swallowing and explains the clinical reasoning behind the development of Froggymouth.

What You'll Explore

  • The neuroscience of swallowing: How neurological processes contribute to habitual oral-motor patterns and functional rehabilitation.

  • The Froggymouth concept: The principles underlying passive swallowing rehabilitation and the device's development.

  • Function and orthodontics: The relationship between swallowing dysfunction, orofacial development, and orthodontic stability.

  • Neuromotor re-education: An introduction to the anoetic approach to changing habitual swallowing patterns.

An informative reference for myofunctional therapists, orthodontists, dentists, speech-language pathologists, and other clinicians interested in the neurological basis of swallowing rehabilitation.

About the Author: Dr. Patrick Fellus

Dr. Patrick Fellus is a retired orthodontist with more than 40 years of experience in pediatric orthodontics and a pioneer in functional approaches to orthodontic treatment.

His clinical observations led him to investigate the role of swallowing dysfunction and lip activity in orofacial development. In 2012, he brought these concepts together in the development of Froggymouth, a device designed for passive swallowing rehabilitation.
